How to convert a PDF to Word
- Drop your PDF into the box above or click "Choose PDF" and select it from your computer or phone. It opens in your browser and the page count and size appear in the list.
- If your document is a scan or contains diagrams you want to keep for reference, tick "Include page images". Otherwise leave it off for a lighter file.
- Press "Convert to Word". The tool reads each page in turn, groups the text into paragraphs and shows its progress.
- Press "Download DOCX". The name follows your PDF, so "contract.pdf" becomes "contract.docx".
- Open the file in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs or Pages, then edit and format the text as needed.
What this converter does, and what it does not
A PDF is built to look identical everywhere, not to be edited. If all you have left of a contract draft, a rental agreement, a CV or a report is the PDF, you can still reuse the words. This tool reads the text from each page, joins lines that belong together, merges words split by a hyphen at the end of a line, marks short large-print lines as headings, keeps bold text bold, and starts each PDF page on a new page in Word.
It is honest about its limits, which is why the page says beta. Tables come through as plain lines of text, multi-column layouts are flattened into one column, pictures are not extracted, and exact fonts, spacing and page layout are not reproduced. For a letter, a contract, a thesis chapter or an article, the result is usually a clean starting point that needs a few minutes of tidying. For a brochure or a form with a complicated design, a desktop editor will do better.
Scanned PDFs are a special case. A scan is only a picture of text, so there is no text to extract, and recognizing it requires OCR, which this tool does not do. If no text is found, you will see a message explaining that, and you can tick "Include page images" to at least get the pages into Word as pictures.
Everyday uses
Updating your CV. You exported your résumé to PDF years ago and lost the original. Convert it, fix the dates and send it again.
Reusing contract language. Copy a clause from a PDF template into your own agreement without retyping it.
Studying and research. Pull the text of an article into Word to annotate, highlight and quote it. Please respect copyright and the terms under which the document was provided to you.
Fixing a typo. A short correction is quicker in Word than in a PDF editor. When you are done, you can turn it back into a PDF with the print dialog of your word processor.
If you only need some of the pages, cut them out first with Split PDF, so the Word file contains just what matters. After editing you can combine documents with Merge PDF. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened by this tool; remove the password in a program where you know it, save an unlocked copy and try again. This tool does not remove or bypass protection.
Why use this converter?
- Your PDF is not uploaded. pdf.js reads the document and the docx library builds the Word file, both in your browser. Confidential contracts and personal documents stay on your device.
- Straightforward about quality. We list what is kept and what is not, rather than promising a perfect copy.
- No account, no watermark, no page limits. Convert as many files as you like.
- Works offline. Once the page has loaded, no connection is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read and the DOCX is created entirely inside your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
Will the Word file look exactly like my PDF?
No. This beta keeps paragraphs, headings and bold text, but tables, columns, images and the exact page layout are not reproduced. Expect a clean text document that you format afterwards.
Why does it say no text was found?
The PDF is probably a scan or a photo of a document, so it contains pictures of text rather than real text. This tool does not do OCR. Tick "Include page images" to place the pages in Word as pictures.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password in a program where you know it, save an unlocked copy and convert that. This tool never tries to bypass protection.
Which programs open the DOCX file?
Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs, Apple Pages and most other word processors.
What happens with tables?
Table cells are read as lines of text in the order they appear, so the grid is lost. Rebuild the table in Word, or copy the numbers over manually.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit, but very large PDFs can be slow and use a lot of memory. Over 50 MB you get a warning; consider splitting the PDF first.
Why is it marked beta?
Converting PDF layout to a flowing document is hard and the results vary by file. We label it beta so you know what to expect, and we keep improving it.
