How to use the age calculator
- Choose your date of birth in the first field. On a computer you can type the date or open the calendar; on a phone your device shows its own date picker.
- If you want to know how old someone was (or will be) on a particular day, such as a school cut-off date, a job application deadline or a future anniversary, pick that day in the second field. Leave it empty to use today.
- Press Calculate age. You get the exact age in years, months and days, plus totals in months, weeks, days and hours, the countdown to the next birthday, the weekday you were born and your sun sign.
- Use Copy result to paste a one-line summary into a message, or Clear to start over with a different person.
How is age calculated exactly?
Most of us answer "how old are you?" with a single number, but a precise age has three parts: complete years, complete months since the last birthday, and the leftover days. This calculator counts from your date of birth to the target date in exactly that way. It first finds the number of whole months between the two dates, then checks whether the monthly anniversary has already passed in the target month. If not, it steps back one month, and the days that remain are counted from the previous anniversary.
A worked example makes this concrete. Someone born on March 15, 1990 is, on November 10, 2026, 36 years, 7 months and 26 days old: 36 full years bring us to March 15, 2026, seven more months reach October 15, and 26 days later it is November 10. The total is 439 months. The tool does all of this with whole calendar days instead of clock times, so time zones and daylight saving changes can never push your result off by a day.
Month ends and leap-day birthdays
Calendar arithmetic has awkward corners. What is one month after January 31? There is no February 31, so the calculator treats the anniversary as the last day of the shorter month. A baby born on January 31, 2000 is 1 month and 1 day old on March 1, 2000, because the monthly anniversary falls on February 29, 2000 and one more day has passed since then.
People born on February 29 are sometimes called leaplings, and they only get a "real" birthday every four years (with the usual exception of century years not divisible by 400). In non-leap years this tool counts February 28 as the anniversary and tells you so in the result. Some countries and legal systems prefer March 1 instead, so if exact eligibility for something like a driving licence, a pension or a contract depends on it, check the rule that applies to you.
What the extra numbers tell you
- Total months and weeks are handy for babies and toddlers, whose development milestones are usually described in months or weeks.
- Total days and hours are popular for celebrations. Many people like to mark their 10,000th day, which arrives at roughly 27 years and four to five months of age, because the average year contains about 365.2425 days.
- Days until the next birthday counts today as day zero. If your birthday is today, the tool says so instead of showing "365 days".
- Day of the week you were born is a fun fact, and it is also useful for genealogy, where records often mention only a weekday and a date.
- Sun sign uses the traditional tropical date ranges and is included purely for entertainment. It carries no scientific weight.
When an exact age matters
Age shows up in more official situations than we tend to notice. School systems set enrolment cut-off dates, so a child's age on September 1 or December 31 can decide the year group. Sports leagues group players by age on a fixed date. Insurance, travel and entertainment providers use age bands for pricing. Employers and landlords may need a minimum age, and retirement plans often work with exact months rather than whole years. In all these cases, set the second field to the cut-off date and read the answer directly instead of counting on your fingers.
The calculator is meant for convenience and quick checks. For legal, medical or contractual purposes, the authoritative source is always the rule of the organisation involved, together with an official document such as a birth certificate.
Western age and other ways of counting
This tool uses the internationally common method: you are zero years old at birth and gain a year on each birthday. Some East Asian traditions have historically counted a newborn as one year old and added a year at the lunar or calendar new year, so a person could be one or two years older on paper than in the Western system. Several of those countries have since moved official paperwork to the international method, but the traditional count is still heard in everyday conversation. If you are comparing numbers from different sources, make sure they use the same convention.
Your dates stay on your device
A date of birth is personal data, and it is a common ingredient of identity checks. That is why this page does all of its arithmetic locally, in your browser. Nothing you select is uploaded, saved in a cookie or sent to a server, and the tool works offline once the page has loaded. Closing the tab erases everything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my exact age in years, months and days?
Select your date of birth and press Calculate age. The tool counts full years since your last birthday, then full months, then the remaining days, and it also shows the totals in months, weeks, days and hours.
Can I find out how old someone was on a past or future date?
Yes. Fill in the optional "Calculate age on" field with any date after the date of birth. This is useful for school cut-off dates, historical figures, upcoming anniversaries and application deadlines. If you leave the field empty, the tool uses today according to your device clock.
How does the calculator handle February 29 birthdays?
In years that have no February 29, the anniversary is counted on February 28 and the result includes a short note saying so. Some jurisdictions use March 1 instead, so confirm the rule that applies to you if legal eligibility depends on it.
How many days until my next birthday?
The result shows the number of days to go, the date, and the weekday it falls on. Today counts as zero days, and if your birthday is today the tool announces it instead of counting to next year.
Why does my age in months not equal years times twelve?
Total months includes the extra months since your last birthday. A person who is 36 years and 7 months old has lived 36 × 12 + 7 = 439 months in total.
How accurate is the "total hours" figure?
It multiplies the exact number of days by 24, so it is an approximation that ignores the hour of birth and the clock changes of daylight saving time. It is perfect for fun milestones but not for precise timing.
Is my date of birth stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, and the page contains no tracking of what you enter. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it will still work.
Is the sun sign accurate?
It follows the traditional tropical date ranges and is shown for entertainment only. Cusp dates can differ by a day between calendars and publications, and astrology has no scientific basis, so please do not use it for decisions.
